How resistor colour codes work

Resistors use coloured bands to represent their resistance value and tolerance.

4-band resistor

The first two bands are significant digits, the third is the multiplier, and the fourth shows tolerance.

5-band resistor

The first three bands are significant digits, followed by the multiplier and tolerance bands.

6-band resistor

A six-band resistor uses the same first five bands as a five-band resistor and adds a sixth band for the temperature coefficient, normally expressed in parts per million per kelvin (ppm/K).

For example, a 4-band resistor with yellow · violet · red · gold is:

4.7 kΩ ±5%

The tolerance tells you how far the resistor's actual resistance may vary from its nominal value.
